HardHats is an introduction to the trades program for the construction trades and wholesale/retail related supply sector. Participants will learn the technical and life skills to become employed as trades helpers/labourers. HardHats is a stepping-stone to an apprenticeship in the construction trade.

What is taught?

Classes are primarily "hands-on" practical training but do include some theory.

  • Safety training and certification includes: First Aid Level 1, WHMIS, Traffic Control Certification and Shop and Fall Safety.
  • Trades' training includes: mechanical/power tools, measuring and math skills, carpentry forms, carpentry framing, roofing, carpentry siding, staircases and rafters, interior finishing (painting, taping & drywall).
  • Life and employability skills training includes: job readiness support includes life skills, trades overview by industry speakers, site tours, labour market research, job search, career management strategies and work experience.

Program Highlights

  • 12-week program with classes held at Camosun College in Victoria and Discovery Community College in Campbell River and Duncan.
  • Visit local job sites and get hands-on experience.
